Hey gang, I haven't been around much and this will probably continue for a bit longer.

Try to make this brief, since typing is a challange.

April 14, had a massive attack, migraine? Walking, writing and reading were near impossible. This improved by 21st. April 23rd, another attack time for an ER visit. I can walk, read, but typing is a challange. The left side of my body is numb, waiting to hear from my doc.... trying to sched an MRI.

See you around, hopefully within days not weeks or months.

(I hope this is correct) Fuel was originally diagnosed as having a sinus infection, but obviously it isn't the cause (or hasn't been cured by anti-biotics)

I just wanted to let you know that Fuel saw a doctor and there are a few possible causes of his current condition. He is having an initial MRI today.

He is having a lot of difficulty reading and typing.

Continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I'll be in touch with him via phone.

Hi! :welcome:

Thanks everyone for your support.

Reading & walking makes me dizzy, and typing with a numb hand is rough. So, I'll keep this breif. I had the MRI this morning. It's just a matter of waiting. If the MRI comes back negative then I should be okay within days (it is just the lingering effects of a migraine), if they find something than it gets ugly. There a boat load of things that could be wrong. Yesterday I saw two neurologists, but they need to see the MRI to really know what is going on but my symptoms mirror a stroke and they have started aspirin therapy just in case. A migraine can apparently can cause one, but it's very rare.

I'll let you when I hear about the MRI, may be as long as Friday.

Take care!

Bad news! :crying:

Dr wants to see the films from yesterday, but the MRI center's report is prelim MS. The Dr does not agree with the report, he needs to review the film but they indicated that they saw a white matter liason (SP?). I'll probably be admitted to the hospital tomorrow for further testing and IV medication.

Be well my friends.....

Well, honestly- the news could be worse.

MS can be very manageable. I have a cousin who was diagnosed 3 years ago and the first year was horrible for her. But then she changed her diet and lifestyle (she also had all her fillings replaced) and has been symptom free for over a year now.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll find good treatment and get on with your life in no time.

Gabby
May 7th, 2004, 07:52 PM
I have some sad news that I've been asked to pass on.

I spoke to MrsFuel earlier this evening and she let me know that Fuel has received a positive diagnosis for MS. He had another MRI today to help the doctors fully understand the full ramifications of the diagnosis. She knows that they have a tough road ahead and is looking forward to meeting with some support groups.

I also called Fuel at the hospital. He is in the first stages of coping with his diagnosis. From what I understand, his prognosis is not as positive as we all may have hoped -- but the doctors will do everything they can to find the best treatment possible. Fuel said that his condition is compounded by some past medical problems and the MS is very aggressive. He begins taking steroids and will be in the hospital for at least a week. He hopes that he will regain his sight (right now it is limited) and be able to walk without a walker. Fuel did ask about the Finale and we got to laugh together about the “stupid, stupid people.” I promised I would call him tomorrow to read some of the boards to him.

I let MrsFuel know that the SA family was sending a beautiful dish garden. I told her that I was overwhelmed by the response and couldn’t believe the envelopes that had arrived from all over the country! At first, she didn’t quite grasp what I was saying. When I told her that the members of SA had organized a “Fuel Flower Fund” and that the prayers of so many people were with them – she broke down. She said to say “Thank you!”

We have another fight on our hands. I don’t know much about MS – but I hope some of you will help out by finding a way to display our support for Fuel. The flower fund covered the flowers and delivery. I will send anything that hasn’t arrived to the MS Society in Fuel’s name.

Kramer

:( Thanks for the update Gabby .... I am so sorry to hear that Fuel has such a tough battle ahead of him....BUT, I know Fuel and he will do his damndest to get through this! So, Fuel, please hang on. The worst is probably immediately to come but once you get into your treatment regiment, I think you will find that you will be back at 'em in no time at all....Im praying for you and sending you a ton of positive healing thoughts!! Hang in there!! You ROCK! ;)

May 7th, 2004, 11:22 PM
Fuel, my heart goes out to you. Here is some patented :) lalake therapy [insert real name where it says lalake] but actually an expletive deleted works better. My friends and I call it $%&! therapy.

When something inexplicable like this happens sometimes you just have to yell and scream as loudly as possible 'why me?' and other phrases of the same sort. I know it sounds odd, but it does work. The more yelling the better and it helps to have someone yell with you. Make a lot of noise, even if you have to do it while screaming into a pillow or something.

Next step is to watch/listen to as much comedy as possible. Old Three Stooges and Animal House are highly recommended. Bill Cosby albums with the ones like "Noah and the ark" and the stories about his brother, Russell and Fat Albert are a hoot.

Repeat as often as necessary.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. God speed, Fuel.

As I sit here with a tear streaming down my check, my children innocently ask me why I am upset about someone I really don't know.

I stopped and thought for a minute. Then I realized ... that is the beauty of this site, isn't it.

We all have an extended group of family and friends that we can turn to in our darkest moments and know that somewhere out there ... at just about any given time ... someone we "don't really know" is thinking about us.

Fuel, you are this site in so many ways. Not just ownership, but a voice. A spoiler opinion. A happy thought in chit chat. Part of the welcoming committee.

Crap, Fuel, this just plain sucks. There are two very close people in my life that have had MS for over ten years and I have seen first hand the struggle they go through. The road is going to be tough, but the loving support of family and friends helps to smooth it out a bit. Even though I've only "known" you a short time here in this wonderful world of Survivor Addicts it just breaks my heart when I think of what you must be going through.

Tuesday Update:

I just got off the phone with Fuel. He is being moved tomorrow to a hospital closer to home to do some rehab. He expects to be there for about 1-2 weeks. His spirits seemed better and he said that he is feeling a little better each day. He's looking forward to his sight being improved enough to read the boards.

He enjoyed the finale. :) He knew I wouldn't like the "second million" and was surprised at how far in the lead Rupert is in our poll (although not surprised he was winning). He asked about baby Kramer and is anticipating the phone call telling him baby and mommy are doing fine (aren't we all! :D ) He laughed about the "heart tracker" and said that I have carte blanche while he's away. Hmmm...I've always wanted to move things around a little. ;)

I didn't tell him about our ribbons -- I thought I'd let that be a visual surprise!

Fuel is home. Got there around 1:00 today. He is still having a lot of trouble with his vision, so still no SA time. :( He said his coordination has improved and he's getting around better. Unfortunately, he'll be "home-bound" for a while yet.

I've read through the thread again and I am feeling like I'm missing something...

From the time that Fuel went in until now, it seems like a lot happened. He seemed to deteriorate badly and has recovered to the point of being home. Did something other than the MS diagnosis occur?

No. Unfortunately, from what I understand, Fuel's MS has been very fast acting and aggressive.

Fuel - my Mom has MS -

It is very common for the initial symptoms of MS to come on very strong - knock you on your ass - you go through every symptom possible in the book - the future looks bleak....

But, after a few months (say 3) it is often the case that MS settles down and goes somewhat dormant (wont get into all the stages/types etc here...)

Important thing to remember - no matter what's going on now - is positive mental attitude! Hard to do, but how you handle these few months can have a huge impact on how MS progresses with you through life.

Know that what you feel now may only be temporary - but no matter what, still believe in who you are and the things you know about yourself.

My Mom was diagnosed when she was 21 years old. She’s 61 now! She lives with me and I know a lot about MS.

If you would like to chat - MSN me or email me at fieldsofcrops@hotmail.com, or my supersecret email crops@shaw.ca – anytime.

I just spoke to Fuel.

On Tuesday, he was feeling great. He said he was getting around with just a cane and felt that his MS was going in remission. He woke up the next day with double vision and vertigo. Basically -- he's taken a huge step backward.

He thinks he'll be in the hospital a minimum of 5 days. He may stay at this particular hospital for longer if they have room in their "rehab" -- otherwise he'll be transfered to the one closer to home once he's more stable.

He's not able to watch tv and he's back to relearning the walker. :(

I'll let him know we're all thinking about him.

I have been thinking about this. I was really surprised at how much of my own entertainment is visually based. I plan to call the MS Society and see what they have to suggest (I meant to do it today but the afternoon got out of hand - see my Editors post) but one idea is books on tape if he enjoys books. I don't know about where he lives but you can get them from the library here so there's no investment unless he'd have to get a portable tape player. If so, get one with a radio. I don't know if they make them (they should!) but one with buttons for different stations like in the car would be great! His wife could program in the stations and then he could go from music to sports to news/talk or whatever he wants whenever he wants and without having to ask for help every time.

I will try to call the MS Society tomorrow but I am not yet sure how tomorrow will unfold (sorry to be unreliable!). If someone else would also like to try that for ideas, their number is 1-800-344-4867 (1-800-FIGHT MS).

Welcome home Fuel!

I made those calls this morning. Here are some ideas to help tide you over.

From the MS Society: They have books, including their newletters and information on current research etc. available on tape. They also have a service called Tele-Friend where a volunteer who also has MS will call once a week just to chat and see how things are going. All chapters are a little different but you can call your local chaper for more info. (215) 271-1500 or go to www.pae@nmss.org (http://www.pae@nmss.org) for more info.

The lady I talked with also suggested I contact organizations that offer services to the blind for more ideas. She says to contact the PA Council of the Blind. They can set you up with the state library where you can get books on tape and a free (probably) tape player if you need it all by mail so you don't need to go out and get anything. She says state libraries have HUGE collections available.

She also sent me to another place that does a local broadcast of volunteers reading a bunch of newspapers and magazines and stuff. I figured if they did it here, somebody probably did it there and, sure enough, this guy was able to tell me about it. They send you a special radio that can pick of these broadcasts. Contact them at Associated Services for the Blind (215) 627-0600 or www.asb.org (http://www.asb.org) or send an e-mail to jcorrigan@asb.org for more information.

Also, once you are up and about, he said that a lot of theater groups and movie houses offer audio description services. Thes don't do it for every show so you'd need to call and find out and make whatever arrangements are needed.

I hope some of these ideas are helpful and I also hope only necessary for the short term. Still, might as well use what's available. Once again, welcome home! :hug2:

Hi Fuel! So sorry to hear about the relapse.

Slitter, great job on the suggestions! Libraries have a lot of books on tape --and Fuel, Cracker Barrels may be in your area. They have a book on tape rental program. $3 a week per book a think. You dont even have to take it back to the same Cracker Barrel!

I think watching Last Comic Standing is a good suggestion, too!

Also, PBS may have some good things to listen to. In my area we have had some Tim Janis music and Irish tenors.

[[[[[[[Hugs!!!]]]]]] to you and your family.

Slitter
June 9th, 2004, 01:29 AM
Thanks, Lalake. I think maybe I was a bit blunt in my last message. I tried to think of stuff I did for entertainment and it was mostly visually based stuff. That really surprized me, TTTT. Since I was feeling like I couldn't add anything substantial and because the MS Society suggested contacting the Council for the Blind when I said vision was effected and that you (Fuel) are bored, bored, bored! So that's what I did and just followed it where it led.

I sure didn't mean to sound like I was saying that I figured the vision difficulty would be permanent or anything like that (in fact talking with the MS people gave me a burst of optimism). I just thought that the ideas were worth following up in the short term and perhaps down the road if there are other vision problems now and then.

So, I maybe wasn't real "smooth" with my last post in this thread but I think we should be aware of these services are available and take advantage of them when we need them. I apologize if I sounded too gloomy or anything in my post, that wasn't my intent at all.

Punkin

I just wanted to give another update:

Fuel continues to struggle with a very aggressive case of MS. His current set-back has left him "behind" where he was the last time he came home from the hospital. He is able to function pretty well (sightwise) in the morning, but as he gets tired, the double vision gets worse. He's hoping that in two weeks he'll be back where he was.

He told me that MrsFuel was going to attend an MS support group this week. He wasn't feeling physically ready to go. He has been trying to learn as much as he can about MS.

Keep sending the well wishes and good ideas!! :D

Can I offer some suggestions?

I currently am living with someone with MS, having left my career on hold while I take care of them. It's my mom. I recently had my sister move in with the idea that I would transition the responsibility for my mom to her, and resume working.

My mom has had ms for over 40 years. Although it was always there when I was younger, it didn't have profound effects on her till say maybe the last 10 years.

My mom has days right now where she can't walk or even sit up. Other days she can climb stairs and get around fairly well. We'll even see changes hourly with her. She has a good hour - she has a bad hour. One thing though that we as a family try not to do is evaluate her on a minite by minite basis. Even a day by day basis is too much for a disease as unpredictable and strange as MS.

I love all this support for Fuel - I love the feedback too. But I would caution the cycle of evaluating his progress on this sort of day by day thing. It gets exhausting and it can be hard on the mind.

I speak of my mom now to people only in generalities. They ask how she's doing all the time - and what I do is take a Macro view as opposed to a Micro view. I say "pretty-good" as opposed to "today was a bad day, but yesterday was good..."This way she's not defined by the state of her disease any given moment.

Fuel - he's in this for the long haul - and as folks who care for him and love him (in that fuzzy message board way) you might want to consider long-term support strategies too.

Anyway - just a few words. Anyone who has any questions about MS or how to help support people with MS is more than welcome to PM me. We could always set up some IM time, as I would be willing to share what I know.

Cheers all and to Fuel.

I managed a Physical Therapy clinic for ten years, and am aware every day that any one of us is just one "banana peel" away from having our whole life tossed upside-down. For Fuel and so many others it's a disease that comes on unexpectedly. Others may suffer a serious accident. But all of us should thank God that we are healthy while we are, and plan for the day that something unexpected can happen to change our lives or the lives of our loved ones.

Okay, time for more therapy.

I had physical therapy this morning, didn't go so well - I'm exausted from my venture to the phyc doc in the city. The most I walked since April - my Mom took me since driving with double vision is not ideal. My wifre was surprised I didn't take the wheelchair.

The state sent a follow-up to the handicap placaard, I had to call them since I never rec'd one.

My symptoms are unchanged and it probably will remain that way for a while.

Typing is hard without hand eye coorinatuon. Poor vision doessn't help. Left hand is clumsy.

It's one of those irritating things.....doctors do go on vacation, and they do need them, but it always seems to happen when we need them. I hope they get you on a meds regimen soon.

Does it help any with your vision to close one eye? If the muscles are affected and weak, your eyes probably don't work together properly. Just an idea, that probably doesn't have any merit, but worth a try.

We're still here any time you need to vent, friend.

Fuel - just glad to see you here - some days are good some are not so good - but keeping up your spirit and reading the love sent to you on this board should help a bit. Hang in there. Praying for you daily.

Crops, is your mother also affected by the cold in winter? My friend was affected by any temperature extremes, but mostly the cold.

She's doing better these last 2 weeks than she has in a while.... it's been very tough - ever since my dad died 3 years ago - Emotional stress is a big trigger for relapse - you really have to keep the mind strong - it's part of her success the past 40 years. But sometimes you have to go with the flow - follow the river so to speak. I would say that to Fuel right now.... follow the river a bit.... (plus I'm playing poker right now).

ah, just recovering from a mild attack, afected my vision & balance.

Typing is a real challange, reading posts is a lot easier. :)

Still can barely walk need the walker, vision is screwy, on the plus side I should start a new medicine, waiting to hear from the dotor.

Thanks for the update, I've been thinking about you. I'm glad it is easier for you to read the posts. I hope you get started on the new medicine soon. Keep on postin', we don't care if there are a few mistakes here and there. It is just good to see you here.

Hey Fuel.......I hope that doc gets on the ball so you can start feeling better. Sorry to hear you're having trouble posting. I hope that becomes easier for you, too......and soon. We're glad to hear from you when you can write.

I had to laugh at IL's acceptance of "a few mistakes", only because it reminded me of Moppy posting with a wonky keyboard, and the substitutions she needed to make for some letters. Hey, if we can decipher those, we can handle yours!

Hi Fuel, I have my fingers crossed for the specialist's return this week and hope you can get some new meds to help you over the rough patch.

Let us know what descriptions you need for Amazing Race, Big Brother or Last Comic Standing players. The reality TV addiction continues!

Thanks for filling us in, Fuel. I'm sorry you've had another attack, however mild it was. :(

If it takes too long to get it right, post it a little wrong! We'll figure it out. I think most of us are used to a few typos now and then!

I forget offhand how long that doc was going to be on vacation but I hope s/he gets back soon so you can try out the new meds! And feel free to yell at that clover if it isn't working hard enough for you! ;)

The latest,

My doc, locAL neruo, has deffered to the city doc who won't perscribe anything to he sees me on the 28th. SO, I hope no major attacks occur - it's a long wait,

Over the weekend started to mix in walking with a cane. So, I am getting better just very slow.

Typing is my biggest challange - the coortrdination is rreally bad - my hands don't go where needed :(

Good to hear from you, Fuel - here's hoping the days fly by until you can see the other doc.

As Lion said, we speak typo, and are glad to be hearing from you.

That said, my FIL, who had a stroke, found that he did faster and more accurate typing by typing into a spell-checking word processor with autocompletion (such as Word), and then pasting it into the program he was actually trying to reach.

If it makes your life better, use the tip. If it's more trouble than it's worth, keep the typos coming!

Congrats on "graduating" to the cane! The 28th sure does seem far away. Any hopes of getting an earlier appt?

I'm so fluent in "typo" I can even write in it! ;) Thanks for the update.

Many dittos to the above thoughts. I sometimes don't add because they have said it all. Today, I just wanted you know that I'm praying for you and have thought of you many times. I have always appreciated everything you have done here to make SA the best Survivor site in the world. I will now pray that an earlier appointment will come up.

Thanks for letting us know what's going on. Always glad for an extra brain teaser when it comes to typos.

I saw my MS specialist yesterday and some changes are going to be made. He is going to schedule one day a month for 6 months for a treatment of IV Stertiods as an outpatient . I also need to give myself daily injections. I attempted driving and almost give the wife a heart attack, I didn't hit anything although she said I would be better at bumper cars  she took over the car. I think I need drivers ED for practice. I can walk 10 feet without a cane, anything longer I need a cane because I still fell a bit tipsy walking. Typing is still really difficult for me.

I could be out of work till next year, but I'm going to work hard at therapy and try for mid-Sept.

Hi, sweetie :wavey:

So happy to hear that things are improving. I managed a Physical Therapy clinic for several years. Our therapists could tell within a couple of visits which patients were going to progress quickly and have a good result. Those were the ones who worked through the pain and seriously followed through on thier home program. The others, who employed little effort and obviously didn't follow the exercize program at home, were really a waste of their time and expertise. I know that you'll be one of those motivated patients that the therapists love to work with. You've set a goal for yourself which is good. It's easier to chart your own progress when you have a date to work towards rather than "next year". You know we are all rooting for you. :cheer:

And it really is true: No pain, no gain!

Hint!! Driving isn't a good idea yet. Bumper cars? Yikes!

I saw the local neurologist yesterday he cleared the way for a August 30th return to work. Hopefully I won't have any disability by then. Driving is still "interesting" I think my reflexes are a bit off. I really notice it at highway speed, driving the neighborhood is no problem. So, I couldn’t drive to my client site which is 40 miles away, but I am working on it going for a long drive on Friday to do something with my hair. The attack(s) left behind a lot of white; I will give here a go to paint it something different.

I started to wear normal clothes again, Dockers with a button down shirt, but I had to pull out the “FAT” clothes thanks to months or steroids and being bed ridden for a few weeks.

Now this heat and humidity is a problem, good thing it's going to break Thursday here. I feel very fatigued because of it.

Great to hear that you are keeping in touch with Moppy, I miss seeing her around here.

Wow, back to work by the end of the month! That sounds great, Fuel! Congratulations! Too bad about the fat clothes but I imagine you'll get rid of that when you get more active. If you don't, you don't. After all you've been through, I'm sure you'll agree that there are more important things!

I am definitely keeping in touch with Moppy. I'm not sure this is the appropriate thread for this but she has her new laptop but the modem doesn't work! :( The pain in her hip doesn't allow her to sit up at the desktop for more than a short while. I'll be sure to fill her in on your news though. I know she'll be delighted to hear it!

Fuel
August 5th, 2004, 10:01 AM
Yes, I am sure the weight will drop once I become active again. It's kinda a bummer but I've been through a lot. I'll try the distraction method so people won't dwell on my MS or fatness, should I go with red hair or Nakomis's sense of fashion?

Looking forward to getting back to work, started to re-establish my business contacts to find work. I learned in the past not to depend of work placing me. I have my work cut out for me if I expect to make that drive daily - 40 miles each way.

It looks like I'll miss the August dinner gathering in MI, it would have been neat to make that an annual event perhaps next year. The flight is now cheap with Southwest in our market.

Thanks for the well wishes! :lovey:
