BFE! I thought that was a Michigan term!!!
Whenever I have to read matching answers, I have to make sure there's no BFE permutation, or the kids giggle.
BFE means "way out in the boonies" -- but the letters stand for Butt F#@& Egypt (I think)

BFE.......that is too funny Gabby. I will have to ask my family in rural Maine if they use that term also. My parents live in a town with a Post Office that doesn't even have a computer. When they send me packages they are covered in all kinds of stamps. Can't wait to see the photos! have a BLAST!

Yeah, you won't find one of those in Alaska. ;) You'll just have to come and visit me and I can fix you right up. :)
Ang, I am thinking gooey butter cake for dessert if it hasn't turned into soup after a couple of hours in the car. We might have to take a pic of it after all this promo, lol.
We use the bum version here - that I've heard anyway except we don't use the initials and "Egypt" is replaced with the appropriate state name like Bum F***, Missouri or, in tomorrow's case, Bum F***, Illinois. One thing for sure - I am going to see a LOT of cornfields tomorrow!

Just got home. It was great to meet Ang and her kids! The meeting place worked out great and we found each other with no problems. I piled in with them and we went of to McDonald's (kids' choice). While there we just talked about anything and everything. She brought me columbine seeds and some rocks from her vacation too!

Whoops! How'd I do that? I hit the enter key and it posted. Hey, Gabby, this place is haunted!
There's not a whole heck of a lot to do there so we just sort of drove around for a while and talked about Lost and again, pretty much whatever. Finally went back to where we'd left my car (by then an oven!) and took a couple pics of us. She shared more of her vacation pics with me too. By then the kids (in the van) informed us that they were cooking so we decided to get going.
I got stuck in some nasty road construction on the way home (10 miles in 40 minutes and no exits) but, other than that, all was fine.
Ang, sometime we've got to try this again but have a little more time! Your kids are great and it was fun spending time with you. :)

Did you say "there is a lot to do in Illinois?"
Ha ha. I'm just kidding, but my family use to have to travel to Indiana every summer from Iowa. Everytime we went through Illinois we got caught in some rain storm. To and from. Rainstorm guaranteed.
I did like stopping and getting burgers. We would stop about midway between the two places. I'm pretty sure they were the White Castle type, but could have been "Henry's". Do you remember being able to get 8 burgers for a dollar? (Probably not. I'm getting to be pretty old.) We had a family of 8 so it was an extremely good deal for us. One burger, a few fries were all a little girl could hold. I don't think we ever got pop to go with it.
My mom use to say we needed a state between her and my grandmother. I can understand why now after hearing all of the stories she and dad have told us.
I am glad you guys got together. I wish my move didn't happen at the same time. I could possibly have driven up to see them both.
Seeing pictures is very rewarding though. Please post As Soon As Possible. (ASAP)

You guys, know that An-g_BB is evidently one of those paranoid moms! The kids were great. The were well mannered in the restaurant and they were very polite to me. Good in the car - OK, Andy whacked his little sister once :bash: Since I grew up with a couple of older brothers, I know that happens. Seriously, IMO, she's got terrific kids.
SBB, the boys are still talking about your house! It really impressed them (and from the pics I saw and descriptions I heard, I'm impressed too!).
We didn't call them Sliders here before they started advertising them as that. We called them Whitey One-Bites or Belly Bombers. I think I was weaned on them. They are a fairly popular stuffing ingredient at Thanksgiving though I have never had the "pleasure" of tasting it.

Background: We have, what the realators call, a mini master off the dining/living area. The tiolet is tucked in the corner off the shower. For privacey you must shut the door to the whole room. Another toilet is in the laundry room and again you must shut the door to the whole room for privacey.
Andy: Why aren't there any seperate doors to the toilets, why do you have to shut the room doors?
Me: That's just the way the house was designed, for privacy you need to shut the door to the room.
Andy: What if you want to do laundry and someone is in there?

Glad you guys liked the gooey butter cake! I was sure the kids would but for adults it depends on their sweet tooth. We always had it for breakfast so that isn't weird. It's really got a lot in common with a Danish.
Just planted the columbine seeds. I had to dig up a stump to do it. Didn't really dig it all up. I got down to several inches below the surface and got out a saw. The place I planted them gets some morning sun but mostly it is pretty shady. I hope they do OK! :luck:

ok- ya'll know that i was in BFE (Illinois) to visit my Parents. They live in a very country /farmer type town. Southern IL is a much prettier area- Shawnee Nat'l Forest- Garden of the Gods- etc... anyway, since I happened to not be far from St. Louis while there!
But to make it simple, Sli n I met in Mt Vernon which is closer to the interstate. ITs a bigger town than Fairfield- more fast food- and other conviences! so here we are-at Mt Vernon. you can see why its named. oh, and even though Sli saw pleanty of corn on her way in, alas... it was just a lil too far out of the framed shot! I am having a "Left Coast Meetup" in late August with my other Message Board, Liberal Refugees.com. I found it about a year ago and it is perfect for me.... all Liberal Progressive 'Hot Topics' Politics, all the time.:)
Rusty Brains and his wife and young daughter (originally from California) ae coming here from Manchester England to visit family, so some of the other folks from this coast are coming to SF too. Muffin Man and Sardog are coming down from Oregon and staying with DH and me. Osirus and Nebula (who met on our board and are now bf and gf :lovies:) are from the Bay Area and I haven't met them yet. RM may be coming out from Colorado and a couple others are hoping to make it too. I'm pretty excited. So are they. After all, this ain't exactly BFE! :ices: (That's a new one for me, too!)
The challenge: Osirus and Nebula are vegans (not even eggs or dairy) and have suggested a Vegan restaurant in SF, but Muffin Man has some dietary restrictions of his own. This is only about a third of his post about what he will or won't eat:
Avacados, never, in seven billion years.
I'm not particularly fond of nuts in general, but walnuts and almonds I genuinely do not like, and I've never understood nuts in a meal. Macadamias aren't bad though, to munch on. I really don't eat nuts. They're mostly okay though.
Pizza's just fine, as long as I can get a plain old pepperoni. We have a gourmet pizza place here that has the best pepperoni and Italian sausage pizza.
I'm not big on condements. Mustard, sour cream, and a few others are just plain out. Mayo is okay on some things. There are a few others that work fine here, but not there. I won't bother explaining. I'm just weird that way.
I will eat Lettuce, onions (on some things, but not everything, and I have to be in the right mood for them, or they just go on the side of the plate), garlic (love garlic), brussel sprouts (sometimes), peas and string beans are always fine.
I will, under no circumstances eat broccoli, asparagus, avacado, or mushrooms (it's a fungus! 'nuff said). They do not taste good, and/or I can't take the texture. And rest assured, I know they don't taste good, because I had to taste them, at some point, to figure that out. Spinach is one that I can tollerate, but being an adult, and able to make up my own mind about what I eat, I will probably not eat, if served. There are other vegitable I won't eat, and others that I can handle, but prefer not to, but I can't think of them. It's usually safer to just say that I don't like vegitables, even though that's not strictly true, so I don't usually lay it all out like this.
Portland has as hundreds of restaraunts that serve menus just like that one O posted. I'm told the food is excellent, if you like that sort of thing. I just don't. We have three or four big, Lebonese restaraunts. My best friend's wife is Lebonese, and I work for her father, and they all tell me the food is fantastic at all of them. I wouldn't know though, because I don't care for most of the ingredients in the meals.
While there are a couple of things that I just arbitrarily decided I don't like, for whatever wacky reason, most of the things I don't like, I arrived at that conclusion by putting it in my mouth, at some point, over the last 36 years, sampling the flavor, texture, ect. and then either spitting out, or forcing it down (depending on the company I was in at the time). That's called trying food. Everyone always assumes you haven't tried something, when you say you don't like something. I was raised by hippies folks. Believe me, all the foriegn foods and healthy foods were out there, growing up. Portland is like SF in a lot of ways, including restaraunts, only a lot smaller. Friends who've moved here from SF will back me up on that one. They all love to go down to NW 23rd, or come over to Belmont and Hawthorne districts (my neighborhood) because the restaraunts, book/record stores and nic-nack stores remind them of SF. I spent many a night, alone at the table, staring at a plate full of inedible crap that I had to finish before I could leave the table. I finished it every time, eventually, so I know what all that stuff tastes like. If I say I don't like it, I don't like it.
:ices: This should be fun! I've assured him that Ray and I do cook "Carnivore" style.
Sli, now I have my hopes up that your company will send you out this way someday. And, of course, if anyone else wants to come out to the most beautiful and Tolerant city in the world, my guest room is yours!

Wow, Punkin. How often do you have to feed this diverse crowd? I think a buffet is your only hope!
It'd probably have to be a convention or something then, Punkin. They don't have any operations out that way that I am aware of (though there is plenty I am not aware of yet since I don't even start until Wednesday). However, if I ever do find myself with a ticket stamped for San Fransisco, you'll definitely hear about it!

:suspiciou I know I haven't been around much this week, but I thought I must surely have missed something. I thought you were meeting somewhere in Illinois. Then I hurry here to see the picture and I find beautiful mountains in the background. I'm thinking I've never seen that part of Illinois. Finally, it dawned on me the pic had been "messed with". Ang...............you are too funny. I'm so glad the two of you had a chance to meet. Isn't it fun to meet online friends in person?

Looks like An-g and I are destined to meet often! YAY!
This coming week I am going to Chicago for a meeting. I expect I will (with my *vast* industry experience) mostly be sitting there wondering what all the other people are talking about, lol. But it is a chance for me to meet one of our info vendors and I need to build a relationship with him so I am thinking of that as the primary purpose for the trip.
Anyway, I leave on Wed. and An-g is going to meet me at the airport! I am guessing that we will get some dinner and do whatever until she delivers me to my hotel. Thursday is the meeting and then I will fly home Thursday night. Don't worry when I am not here on Wednesday and possibly Thursday if I am really beat when I get home.
But how cool to get to see An-g this week and then IL next week on her way back from New Mexico! This is GREAT!
I don't know how much traveling I'll be doing with this new job yet but if I am coming your way, expect a PM from me! :D

If I drove in my travels today, I would see you. With MS I limit my driving to 4 hours. So, we typically fly to a location than drive a short distance to the hotel.

CHICAGO ?? Hey guys, I'm in the heart of Chicago in
BUCKTOWN. Where are you meeting up at ???
Ohare or Midway airport? ( not that I know my way around either of them, never drove there on my own).
Is your hotel near the airport ?
I could maybe join you, (if it is not too far to drive, and I can't do night driving cuz of my vision problem) or you could come into the city and we could all go to dinner. There is a strip of many restuarants and trendy shops here in Bucktown just walking from my house.
Let me know. I'd like to meet both of you but I also don't want to mess up your plans you've already made.
What time are you getting in town Slitter???

July 24th, 2006, 09:18 PM
Whoo! Sounds like a party! :D
Patchie, I have no idea where that is or where I will be, lol. Let's see if this helps. I land at Midway (supposedly) at 5:50 pm on Wednesday. My hotel is at 500 S. Dearborn St. I'm hoping that is near the Board of Trade since that's where the meeting is on Thursday.
Believe it or not, I have only been to Chicago twice and I didn't have a clue where I was then either. The magic of taxi cabs!
After the meeting ends on Thursday, I'll just cab it back to Midway where I will sit on my you-know until my 8:15 flight home which means I will be lucky to drag my behind into my house by 10.
It's great with me if you want to join us but you might be better off working out the logistics with An-g.
Better bring your camera again, An-g!
Lion - first opp I get to head your way I'll be letting you know. :)

Midway is on the South side, (I live North side)
so you guys will be meeting up in the evening. I know I can't drive out to Midway, I'd be lost for sure.
Your hotel is not too far from me (I'm about 2000 North, and about 2000 West) Taking a cab to Board of Trade will be easy to do just leave early cuz of heavy traffic downtown.
Let's see what An-g thinks. If she is driving you, it'd be up to her if she wants to drive up North. It's not far, just that I can't read the signs when it gets kinda dark so if I don't know the area I get lost. I have never been a South side gal so I really am unfamiliar with things there. If she wanted to drive up North, you could park in my driveway and we could walk to a restaurant, there are so many here walking distance and all kinds of shops open in the evenings. Or if you guys know somewhere else that you are going, let me know and maybe i can take a cab there (if it is not too far).
Hey Virgo, you said you are bored, hop a plane and come to Chicago too.

Oh, guess what. My neighbor used one of those throw away CVS drugstore video cameras to film our helicopter ride. She showed it to me today and I was so excited to see the pilot again. Damn......she sat in the back and only caught the back of his head and mine. Soooooooo disappointed.
Well, good luck. I hope you guys manage to work this all out. Never been to Chicago. My husband used to go there all the time on business until he retired. Too bad I didn't know Patchie then, I could have gone with him.

Just take my word for it.........he was cute. I even went to the helicopter company's website to see if there was a photo of him. What comes up in the research.......the fact that a helicopter from that company crashed on the same glacier we went to on June 6th of this year. Nobody died, but all 6of the passengers and the pilot got slightly hurt, but the helicopter had severe damage. Thank God I didnt see that before I went. lol lol

I'm with ya with the :luck: Let's just say if she does get delayed alot then we will just have to scratch these plans cuz I know she is concerned about the time frame getting to sleep tonight etc...............but I hope it works out ok.

I'm baaaaack! Whew! The delays I missed on my way up were all waiting for me when I tried to get home (When I got to the airport there was a tornado watch in effect. Someone told me a bit later that it had changed to a warning. Then someone else told me that I tornado had been sighted south of there. I hope neither of you guys were affected!)
I was originally scheduled to leave at 8:15 but was on standby for the 5:50 flight because I took the train to the airport and it got there really fast. I ended up back on my 8:15 flight because it actually left sooner than the other one - though it's plane was in the air coming from Columbus - I assume Ohio). Wheels up at about 10:35 pm. I just now got home but I had to come and check out this thread before going to bed. :)
It was a blast to get to spend some time with Ang and Patchie! We got to tour Patchie's house which is, if memory serves, over 100 years old and just full of beautiful woodwork and other stuff.
I knew we were in trouble from a navigational standpoint when the very first thing Ang did was go the wrong way in the airport parking lot! :) I'm still a little amazed that we managed to find Patchie's house and I personally attribute that way more to her good directions than any small contributions I made.
Once together, we laughed until our sides hurt and had a wonderful, if not very long time together. Patchie insisted on paying for dinner too. I don't think Ang mentioned that. I wish I'd had an inch of space left in me to try the cake but I stuffed myself at dinner and still couldn't eat it all and then filled in any remaining cracks with the Italian lemonade (which I'd never had before).
We finally had to say goodbye and Ang took me to my hotel which was a bit of an adventure in itself but we did pretty good really.
This morning (which almost seems like last week) I was on the platform for the opening bell of the Chicago Board of Trade's commodity trading. What a zoo! All these people making hand signals to each other and shouting. They said it was a slow day but you could have fooled me. Looked like corn futures (the nearest pit) were really hopping. It was crazy and I'm really glad I don't do that for a living! It was definitely something to see though.
The rest of the day was listening to lots of speakers and, fortunately, eating a lot (and last night I thought I would never eat again!). It was fortunate because I never did manage dinner tonight because the airport was such a mess. So many people were trapped there the lines were unbelievable.
Thanks Ang and Patchie! Despite all the crap at the end of it, I am really glad I made this trip and had the chance to spend time with you! I really enjoyed that and you were both wonderful to me. There is no doubt that good ol' "southern" hospitality extends at least as far north as Chicago! :)

So glad you were able to get out of the airport ok last night. There are people stranded at Ohare overnight and Midway had 2 hr delays. It was good you posted this message cuz I was wondering if you got your flight on time. The storms rolled through here in the early evening last night and they did some damages knocking trees down etc, not right by me but lots of areas got flooded. I think out near Ang's way as the worst stuff went South.
How neat that you were on the platform for the opening bell yesterday. I bet you are tired today.

My butt was really dragging today! I got to the office at about 8:30ish so that was pretty good but it took a LOT of coffee to get me going. I took a nap as soon as I got home but I still feel ready to go to bed, lol.
I'm looking forward to meeting Mr. Irish and Irish next Tuesday. At least I won't be quite this tired the next day! :)
Oh, BTW An-g and Patchie, all was good Wednesday night. No fire alrams.

Fortunately, I had this new, very handy XL t-shirt to compensate for my forgetfulness in packing. ;)

Did you see An-g's questions in Favorites? I think I might have inspired that, lol. Funny how this stuff transfers to the boards. :)
OK, for the rest of you, I forgot to pack pjs. I have had too many experiences in hotels where the fire alarm goes off in the middle of the night and you have to go out and stand around in the parking lot while the fire dept checks it out. Forgetting to pack your pjs would be a really bad thing if the fire alarm goes off in the middle of the night!
99 times out of 100 it is a false alarm but I did have one time when there really was a fire. So you can't not leave and you don't want to waste a lot of time getting dressed just in case - it could be a real fire in the room next door. That t-shirt - especially since it was XL - was REALLY nice and comforting to have! Not that Patchie probably planned it that way. :)

Sli, did you ever read Punkin's story about how she forgot to leave clothes out for leaving her cruise ship the next morning. On a cruise, the night before you leave they make you put your suitcases out in the hall and they take them and get them ready to be taken to the plane. When she woke up in the morning she had a top, but forgot pants and had to wear her husband's pj bottoms off the ship and onto the plane. My father in law did the same thing, but had to wear both the top and bottom home. I was so careful to leave clothes unpacked. Glad you made it back safe and sound, but next time pack your PJ's!!!! lol lol

I did read that - and saw the picture too! LOL. I don't think I'll forget pjs next time. It's just been such a long time since I traveled for work I am out of practice. I had it all down to a science at one point. I could pack for a week in just a few minutes. This was just for one night and I blew it in a big way!
But hey, no fire alarms so it was OK. There was one hotel in particular that I stayed in a lot that seemed to have them all the time and that probably made me unreasonably paranoid about the whole idea of fire alarms. Even so, that big t-shirt helped me sleep better! :)

Wow, adventures in traveling! So glad you had the T-shirt, just in case. I must remember the clothes thing, in case we ever go on a cruise.

What a wonderful surprise I got this morning from Slitter & An-g_BB........they are 2 sweet people. Sent me a beautiful thank you gift which I will really enjoy, it's a centerpiece of fresh strawberries with marshmellows in the center of each and a balloon.
So pretty.
Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. :hug2:

It figures they would do something nice like that to show their appreciation for you showing them a good time in Chicago. This site has the best people.

Just read your message An-g, sweet.
I have to tell you these are such good strawberries I can't believe how sweet they are, AND there were real ripe black grapes below the strawberries too and lettuce tucked in between to be the leaves, so kewl.
Good thing it didn't come yesterday cuz I was out early and for most of the day. Glad I was here when it came today. And I will have a nice keepsake vase afterwards too, so THANKS again to you and Slitter. ( I hear it was your idea Slitter so it was a good one). :thumb:

We both wanted to do something nice for you, Patchie. I just came up with the idea of it being from that same place where we all peered through the windows on the way to dinner. :)

Well I just finished the LAST beautiful strawberry.
These were the MOST delicious strawberries I have ever had, they were HUGE and so sweet and juicy, the grapes were too. There were actually 2 small heads of lettuce tucked inside the vase with 43 skewers inserted in it and each had a grape then a strawberry on it, so that is ALOT. I cleaned out the vase and now have a lovely keepsake I will treasure from our meeting.
Thanks again. Oh, and I did take pictures of it also :lickingli
