J works in a plant that has mandatory OT in the fall/winter but very few orders in the spring/summer. So they deal with layoffs.
This year, they're laying off the guys early. Last year, it hit in April, this year, it starts this week. Rumor has it that they'll be doing 2 rounds of layoffs, 15-20 each time. First batch was announced Wed. J survived. However, we received word that he was bumped by someone who has seniority over him. He's going to work early today to meet with personnel to see if he can bump someone. If he can, he'll be working different hours and a different job (he's a machine operator - so he could only be bumped by another operator - but he can bump an assistant or a laborer). I have a friend who works there as well - with enough seniority that he'll never worry about a layoff - who says he thinks this time the guys will get call backs in June.
We can survive a layoff, but we'd rather not. So please cross your fingers for us.
