Oooo, that's a good point about Christian and Claire being there together when MIB and Smoky never appear together.
It would seem that the circle of ash around the cabin was to keep Smoky out. I mean, unless the circle was broken before the show started, Smoky has been outside all along. It was like their first night on the island when they heard Smoky in the jungle and saw the tree tops moving. And of course, Smoky got the co-pilot too. All this seems to indicate that the inside of the cabin was being protected.
