random thoughts
Just a few preliminary thoughts about the upcoming season. First, my thoughts about the players. I will divide them into three categories: players, athletes, and pawns. Players are those whose first priority is winning the game. They are strategic thinkers, and are willing to do whatever it takes to win (these people are usually ruled by thoughts, not emotion)(examples are Rich, Tina, and to a lesser extent Colby). Athletes are those who are physically and mentally competitive. They are the ones who can make a IC run (examples are Colby, Kelly, Alicia). Pawns are those who either have other higher priorities besides winning the game (exposure, fame, the experience, becoming better people) or simply do not have the heart and/or mental capacity to do what it takes to play the game (examples are Colleen, Lis, Rodger, Amber).
So here are my thoughts about this group of players:
Players:
Brandon Quinton
Carl Bilancione
Athletes:
Clarence Black (could also be a player)
Ethan Zohn
Linda Spencer (she overcame cancer for goodness sake- you think these silly challenges are going to bother her!)
Pawns:
Frank Garrison (could be player)
Kim Powers
Lindsey Richter
Silas Gaither
Teresa Cooper (could be athlete)
Diane Ogden
Jessie Camacho (could be athlete)
Kelly Goldsmith
Kim Johnson
Lex Van Den Derghe
Tom Buchanan
Other thoughts:
* I like the make-up of the Samburu tribe better than the Boran tribe, and would expect them to have an edge going into the merger.
* However, I could see a conflict between Garrison (his bio shows conservative things) and Spencer (her bio shows liberal things). If that happens, one or both could get booted early. Also a possibility that Garrison and Quinton (since he is gay) could butt heads. But for whatever reason, the reality track record would show that these guys would actually end up in an alliance. Will that trend continue?
* Ethan Zohn is a vegetarian. That was Kimmi's undoing last year, but it shouldn't be a problem as long as Zohn doesn't decide to preach the message to those who don't want to hear it (I have convinced that Kimmi's sole reason for being on the show was to spread the animal right's view.)
* Just as an aside, from the one photo I saw on the CBS page, Jessie Camacho is by far the hottest women ever to appear on Survivor! No contest! Forget about Lis, Amber, and Colleen, Jessie is hot!
* My picks for winner right now would be out of Brandon Quinton, Carl Bilancione, or Linda Spencer. That is not a F3 prediction, just a winner will come out of this group.
Er, that's it for now. Of course, you can never determine someone's personality from website bio's. Any of these players could turn out to be the most annoying person alive and could be eliminated just for that reason. And of course, all this are just somewhat educated guesses (with the emphasis on guess). For example almost all these players have some background which indicate that they might be able to make a run in IC's.
But I thought it would be fun to try to make some guesses before seeing a single ad, a single vidcap, a single show, and see if I could come anywhere close. Pure speculation, but I guess that is what this forum is here for.

Jesse
I have to admit I saw the photo of Jessie in her police uniform. Yum. Already starred in one of my dreams.
ahem, yes, right...
Well, I think its too early to judge until I actually hear and se them on TV, but atheletes should be easy:
Clarence
Ethan
Jessie (she's a cop)
Guesses
Jerri like manipulator = Kim Powers
Amber like follwer = Kelly Goldsmith
X-factor = Lex Van Den Derghe

I love this thread but I can't add much yet as I need to see them in action before I can determine anything more.
Clarence of course is a definite athlete as are Ethan and Silas. I would add Lindsey to my athletes list too. I get a real Kelly Wigglesworth vibe from her.
I see Linda as more of a player though. I think she's got the whole package and has a great shot at making it if her tribe can be dominant.
Maybe when we actually see the show we could add a "pawns who they think are players" section for fun.
Perhaps calling it the Jerri Manthey Memorial Category?

From the first impressions that I got from the preview and the profiles, I'm really liking Ethan and Jessie. I don't know, something about them... And that Clarence dude! He looks like the crazy party type. should be fun to watch... hope he's not lazy though. I hate it when they peg the lazy tag on black guys

I got the exact opposite vibe from Linda. My husband and I both said, "not a merge-maker."

I missed Linda on the preview - apparently no one at my house understands the no talking during Survivor (and related material) rule.
What was it about her made you think she wouldn't make it?

I have the same problem at my house, Holly. Fortunately, I got it on tape since I had a board meeting last night.
Oh, and I think I might be getting a divorce because as soon as MrQueen saw Jessie, he quit pawing at me.

I "neglected" to tell the WizKids about the show, so I got to see most of it before they invaded at about 8:45. They also forget the "no-talking" rule. Drives me nuts.
Linda appeared wimpy, BTW. Her "act" on her audition tape showed her camping in a snow storm, while wearing an athletic top. BFD!
I am surprised queen. Seeing someone like Jessie on TV usually results in just the opposite reaction from me... MrsWizard usually runs for the hills...

Jay gets out of work at 8. Survivor was on in our bedroom, 3 of the kids were with me, and the only sound was them scribbling notes. The kid watching Charmed in the living room jumped up and wouldn't let Jay into his own bedroom until she heard a commercial. Like she told him, it's Survivor time and there are rules to follow. Get used to it.
Now if I could only get the people downstairs from us to understand those rules...

I'm on the west coast so this is still a pre-episode one post...
I think the little players/athletes/pawns distinction is a good one but it's practically impossible to tell who the players are until a couple of episodes in.
Even then an athlete can be a player, right? Colby had a good head for the game -up until his last decision. Jerri and Rich seem like the archetypal players to me. For some it works for others not so much.
Pawns:Generally, people who "realize" in the middle of the game that it's about winning are called "Pagongers" and they're usually too late.
Athletes are always at a disadvantage if they don't form an alliance. Colby was immediately targetted with five votes at the merge because he seemed like a major threat to win. Next week, goodbye Alicia. And Keith was a major athlete/pawn hybrid if ever there was one.
Anyway, two and half hours to go on the left coast. Can't wait!

Angus: It's very likely that Lindsey will try and be a player. If Silas can't be a player he'll fall back on his athleticism. Frank will ultimately be a pawn. Linda has to be a pawn or athlete, she'll get dicked over if she tries playing. Tom has to be an athlete or pawn. Clarence an athlete or player. Jesse a player or athlete also. Kelly a pawn, maybe player. Do you think these are overly judgemental reasonings for what we get from their bios, and what we've learned since?
I will stand behind every prediction with supporting reasoning, and often concrete evidence. I think we can quite clearly categorize them, but then again I've been wrong a lot recently.
Anyway, FWIW I am in SF on WC time too, so I can't wait!!! Time to go prep the dorito bowl.

We're only getting little bits at a time, might as well judge the book by the cover. . . that's what it's for :-)
But that's how it goes, you form an opinion from scene to scene, show to show.
